These days, there are hundreds of valuable educational experiences for high school girls to enjoy. High school students have all kinds of fascinating clubs and activities available to them, as well as plenty of volunteer and work options. But if your daughter really wants to expand her horizons, she might want to consider becoming a foreign exchange student. While studying abroad is commonly associated with college students, there are plenty of programs open to high school students as well.
Studying abroad can open a host of educational opportunities for high school students, but that definitely won’t stop parents from worrying about their kids. After all, if their teens can barely manage to do their own laundry, how on Earth will they get by in a foreign country? Many of these worries can simply be eased by getting to know more about foreign studies programs. Listed below are a few helpful hints that any parent should know before his or her daughter gets on the plane.
Learn about the Host Family
While the occasional foreign studies program will place students in dorms, most students studying abroad end up with host families. These families volunteer to host students from around the world and teach them about life in their country, and they’re carefully screened to ensure trustworthiness. But it’s still important for parents to learn about the family with which their daughter will be staying. The foreign studies program will provide contact information, so be sure to make use of it.
Teach Your Daughter about Safety Precautions
The overwhelming majority of foreign studies come home safe and sound without encountering danger during their time abroad. Unfortunately, the occasional incident does occur and when it happens, females tend to be targeted. Before she leaves for her trip abroad, enroll your daughter in self-defense classes. In these courses, she’ll learn to defend herself against a variety of attackers. The classes may also have the benefit of improving her confidence and self-esteem, two assets that definitely prove useful while spending time in a foreign country.
Travel Insurance
No matter how many preventative measures you and your daughter take, there’s always the chance that an emergency situation could occur while she is abroad. If this does happen, you’ll want your daughter to be equipped with the necessary insurance to ensure that she’ll be well cared for. Many students participating in foreign studies programs choose to invest in short term medical insurance. This type of insurance plan can provide necessary coverage without acting as a financial drain.
Use Social Media to Keep in Touch
A general trend in foreign studies programs is that daughters tend to keep in touch with family and friends better than sons. While it is never a good thing for students to spend excessive time pining over Facebook pictures of their friends at home, there’s nothing wrong with connecting once in a while. Encourage your daughter to post pictures of her adventures on Facebook or better yet, keep a travel blog. And make a point of chatting with her on Skype or another video chat program at least once a week. She’ll definitely appreciate your support, and the regular contact can put the both of you at ease.
