Duck for Turkey Day by Jaqueline Jules, illustrated by Kathryn Mitter
(Albert Whitman & Company, 2009)

This wonderful book gives a new spin to the classic Thanksgiving Day tale. Young Tuyet is excited to celebrate Thanksgiving with her Vietnamese American family. She is looking forward to the time off from school and the delicious dinner. Then, disaster strikes! Tuyet is mortified when she finds out her family is having duck instead of turkey for dinner. Despite her own misgivings, Tuyet enjoys her family’s special version of Thanksgiving dinner and is even more surprised when she gets to school on Monday. Tuyet’s classmates had dinners as unique and special as hers. Some of her classmates celebrated the holiday with turkey, but others celebrated with roast beef, lamb, and even enchiladas! Tuyet discovers that the meaning of Thanksgiving is not
defined by what is on the table. Instead it is an occasion to share what is in your heart. This beautifully written and playfully illustrated book will allow you and the little girl in your life to reflect on your own unique family
traditions, and what the holiday means to you. Though every family celebrates in their own way, Thanksgiving is a time when we can all be thankful for what we have and those we love.
