Stain Proofing Kids

I have a dilemma.
One shared by millions of parents.
Not one that requires medical attention or medication (though I may want to pop a few pills after this post).
Rather, one of a more simpler nature….
How do I make my kids stain proof???
As in SHOUT, Spray & Wash, and Zout.
What’s with all of the sudden fuss over stains and my kids, anyway? After all, when you have kids, parents understand that jelly stains, ink marks, dirty fingerprints, and spilled sticky juice – all come with the territory. It’s just an unwritten rule of parenthood.
BUT, I am in a real funk this morning because my daughter’s stain has crossed the line. It’s the kind of nasty stain that has me wanting to scream and hang from the rafters while pulling my hair out.
You see, this is what I found on my daughter’s bed today:
No, not the worst stain in the world, but it’s on her BRAND NEW BEDSPREAD. The one I just bought her from Pottery Barn Kids. The ONE SHE HAD TO HAVE. The one I drove all the way out to the outlet to buy. The one that is sold out in stores. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!!!!!
It seems Ms. Pandi felt the need to paint her nails blue during her “quite time” yesterday.
Not that it’s the end of the world. Heck, I should know better than to buy anything I don’t expect stained for my daughter’s anyway. But man oh man – why can’t I just have ONE thing around here that doesn’t require a stain stick or me throwing a tizzy fit worse than my toddler???
You know what I think we need? Companies like Pottery Barn to make everything stain proof. And when our beautiful babies are born, I’m advocating for a stain stick to come in the hospital take-home kit along with some anti-anxiety medication for parents.
Now – does anyone know how to get nail polish off a bedspread?

OMG, I have near-identical spots on my bedspread, but from Boots’ art work with magic marker while I’m working. Turns out those things ooze like crazy if you don’t put the cap back on. Who knew?
But at least my bedspread is 5-years-old. And I was looking to replace it anyway. Hmmm … Maybe I’ll check out Pottery Barn and see what they have in adult sizes.
A kid-proof stain stick would be a great invention. One that removes spit up as newborns, butternut squash as they move on to solids (does ANYTHING really take that out), blue nail polish and on up the line. Too bad I have absolutely no scientific bent.
Been there. But my 2yo little darling thought our mattress cover needed some nice blue marker swirls. Now everytime I go to make my bed I see them, mocking me.
Oh noooooooo!
I have no idea how to get it out…but could you maybe hit the fabric store and find something to make a matching patch for that piece?
Oh, dear. Maybe color that 1 entire square blue and call it a day
I feel you, though…stain-proofed kids would be a dream come true. That could be our million dollar idea, Elizabeth! Let’s think on this some more…
Ibby once painted the side of a bookshelf with fingernail polish and a small section of wall. I got most of it off with fingernail polish remover and then moved the shelf slightly over to cover the damage done to the wall (more by the remover, of course). Maybe you could just strategically place a pillow on the spot?
Oh dear. Maybe some nice perfectly placed throw pillows, perhaps? hehe. Um, I am the worst at stain-removal advice so I usually rely on straight bleach. I know, there’s colors in it but if you take a Q-tip and blend it around…it might hide it a little. Better than blue ya know? Good Luck! My dd is into painting her nails too! I will use this as a learning moment, thanks
Ouch, just looking at that hurts.
I don’t know how to remove nail polish from fabric but I hope you can find some way to cover it up.
Le Sigh. So, so sorry. It is so frustrating when things like this happen.
I have had luck with bug spray, like OFF or something like that to try to get the stains out. Then follow up with Oxy Clean and launder. But this happened on a pair of jeans so they were pretty durable.
Now, I keep nail polish up high so they can’t get to it as I have 4 girls.
If the OFF option doesn’t work, I’d try the fabric replacing option like the other commenter recommended.
