Get ready to get Dirty with delicious Dirt Cake!

Get ready – get set – get DIRTY! One of my fellow bloggers Jen at- raisingcreativeandcuriouskids- mentioned that her girls like to play with pudding mixed with Oreos and gummy worms. It made me remember one of my favorite childhood concoctions – the infamous “Gummy Worm Dirt Cake.” If you’ve never made one of these gooey, yummy, oh-so-messy delights, then it’s about time you got started! I promise, your girls will LOVE it and you may even think it’s pretty cool too. If your one of those “dirt cake savvy” moms, then I applaud your creativity and encourage you to make another one of these dirty delights with your daughter. This cake is usually a “big hit” at parties and around Halloween. You’ll love hearing the kids comment on how “gross” it is, as they gobble it up! So, go ahead, have fun and get dirty!

Oh-so-Gooey Gummy Worm Dirt Cake

Here’s what you need:
1 pkg. Oreo cookies
1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
3 cups of milk
1/2 cup of butter, softened
1 (12 oz.) tub Cool Whip (us chocolate to ‘kick it up a notch’)
1 cup powdered sugar
2 (3 1/2 oz.) pkg. instant vanilla or chocolate pudding
1/2 tsp. vanilla
4 gummy worms and/or gummy bears

Before you get started, it’s important to keep in mind that this is not your “traditional” cake. When you’re done assembling the ingredients, it will resemble a mound of delicious pudding, not a perfectly iced cake.

How to Assemble the Glorious Mess:

1. Crush all the Oreos. Put about 1/3 of the crushed Oreos into a clean flower pot (preferably new) and then set it aside. *Note you can use the holiday Oreos (spring yellow cream, Halloween, orange cream, etc.) for an added “colorful” touch.

2. Mix together the butter, cream cheese, vanilla, and sugar together. Place aside.

3. Combine the milk and pudding mix. Then mix the Cool Whip into the pudding.

4. Combine pudding mixture and butter-cream cheese mixture (mmmmm…looks yummy already!).

5. Layer about 1/3 of the mixture onto the crumbled Oreo cookies in the pot. Alternate layers of pudding mixture and cookie crumbs until all ingredients are used.

6. Once you have finished layering, place some gummy worms in the “soil” so it looks like they are crawling out of the pot. For an added touch, try using a clean toy garden trowel to serve the cake. You may also add other decorative items to the dirt like plastic or edible flowers and other little “edible” critters.

7. When done decorating, chill in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours before serving.
